LANDSCAPE
This painting is called “Willows at sunset”. It was painted by Vincent van Gogh, a Dutch artist. Van Gogh shows us willows in a very colourful landscape. He uses blue and orange in order to create an expressive, complementary colour contrast. Look at the sky, how does the painter show us that the sun is shining? And how does he create space in this landscape? Van Gogh is one of the most famous Dutch painters. His style in painting is very characteristic. He uses contrasting colours and dynamic brush strokes. At first he painted the Dutch landscape but later on he worked in France. |
Space suggestion
Although this is a two-dimensional painting on a flat surface (oil painting on canvas), van Gogh gives the impression that there’s a lot of space. The field seems endless, the horizon very far away. He uses some tricks to create space. How does he do this?

Assignment 1Look at Van Goghs painting and fill in the gaps using the following words:
weaker, forward, overlaps, detailed, bigger, cut off, clearer.
Suggestion of space means that the space ‘seems’ really present, it seems really three dimensional. In two dimensional images this can be done like this;
Near things look ……………..than far away things.
One object in the foreground …………..the others in the background.
The shapes in the foreground are more ……………….than the others in the background.
If the shapes don't fit in the frame of the picture, they are ………………. by it.
Tones become ………………….as the landscape retreats further from you.
The colours in the foreground will be …………………..than the colours in the background. (Remember your hand-out on colour); warm colours appear to come ……………………..and cool colours appear to recede.
